One of the most genius decisions the people I was with and I made as a family was giving my teenage child his own kitchen and bathroom in the basement.
Our condo didn’t have nearly enough kitchens for all our children to have their own space, however not all of them wanted their own section and they were delighted to share with a sibling.
My oldest child however was desperate for privacy and he hated sharing a room. Every one of us wasn’t planning on moving in the near future, so my partner and I tried to guess ways to deliver our child his own kitchen without adding a new addition. Our basement was only one third of the way finished, however there was another half that needed to be finished as well. Every one of us decided to finish the rest of the basement and create a new section for our daughter. There were tons of areas to start making a modest kitchen and a full bathroom. The section would be perfect, the people I was with and I just needed to add a source of heat. The basement was regularly chilly during the Winter months, so it wasn’t a suitable place in my opinion without heat. The previously finished section in the basement had a ductless mini cut plan to keep it nice and toasty, so the people I was with and I decided to do the same in the newly complete space. The ductless mini cut plan would run off of electricity and it would be straight-forward for our child to control. The ductless plan took up wall space, however we knew my child would love controlling the temperature of his own room.
