Ever since I moved away from home, my parents have wanted to downsize. I was the last of the kids to fly the nest and head off to college. Growing up, we had a 5 bedroom home, which was good for 7 people. But, when my parents became empty-nesters, they found it too big. After some research, they found this amazing small community with lovely 3-bedroom homes. Dad and mom put the previous house on the market, and it didn’t take long to sell. They bought a smaller house and have been living there for the past year. Last month, I phoned them to catch up. Mom and dad were lamenting about the high energy bill. When they bought the house, it came with a furnace and an air conditioner. It’s winter, so I know they need the furnace to keep the house warm. But dad said the previous month’s energy bill was too high. It was even higher than it was heating the previous 5 bedrooms home. Mom asked if there could be an issue with the furnace, and I wasn’t sure. The best they could do was contact an HVAC company in the area to seek the services of an HVAC technician. Dad said he’d been thinking of that and decided to call the HVAC company the following morning. He booked an appointment, and the HVAC technician arrived at the house after a few hours. She went through every inch of the furnace system and noticed several worn-out parts plus the furnace needed a tune-up. The HVAC technician explained to my parents the importance of regular furnace maintenance. Doing so made it more energy-efficient and would bring down the energy costs.
