I thought the HVAC technician was talking to me.

I heard the HVAC technician talking when he was in the basement.

He was talking so loudly that I could hear him, but I didn’t understand what he was saying.

I opened the door, and asked him to repeat what he was saying. The HVAC tech told me he was talking to his wife, and he apologized for being so loud. It took him an hour to repair the furnace, and I wondered how much of that time was taken up with his conversation. When he sat down to explain the bill to me, his phone rang again. He started talking loudly and told the person, he had already explained why he couldn’t talk to her. He told her he was at work, and he couldn’t take time to talk on the phone. He was with his customer and he would call when he got into the HVAC service van. I heard her yelling at him, and I reached for the phone. I knew I shouldn’t have, but I told her I was the HVAC customer. I had been without heating for several days, and her husband, boyfriend, or whatever; had been her working on my furnace while talking to her. If she kept harassing him while working, he would lose his job. If my furnace wasn’t correctly repaired, I would call the HVAC company and it would be her fault if he lost his job. She apologized and hung up the phone. I don’t know if she called him back, but the HVAC technician smiled and told me thank you, because she called him everyday, knowing he was working.
