There’s a difference between a real estate agent and a broker

Do you know the difference between a real estate agent versus a real estate broker? Up until recently, I believed they functioned in the same way.

I was sitting at the nail salon waiting for my technician to finish up with a client that she had.

And there was a lady sitting next to me who decided to start up a conversation with me. She was asking whether I owned or rented my home and after being hesitant about sharing any information with this strange lady, she mentioned that she was in real estate. So, after a few minutes of chatting, I made the mistake and called her a real estate agent, to which she corrected me and said that she was a broker. To be honest, I don’t believe I have ever used the term real estate broker, but I have used the words realtor or real estate agent before. And in my head, those terms were interchangeable. But this lady who was a bit passionate about what she did, explained that she was more than a real estate agent. She went on to explain that a real estate agent and a realtor work under a real estate broker. Furthermore, she stated that the real estate agent doesn’t have the qualifications of a real estate broker, nor do they have the education or the licensing. Well, I am glad that she explained the difference to me, so that I can avoid the mistake of thinking the 2 professions were the same. Anyway, the lady was rambling on and on a bit, so I was happy when my technician was done with her client because I was able to get my nails done.
