Working at home with better air conditioning

There were a myriad of reasons why I thought working from home would be a disaster.

  • And for those reasons, I had turned down the company’s offer to work remotely a number of times.

The company was trying to get a bunch of us in the technology department to work at home. But I resisted because I wanted to be in an office with commercial HVAC and colleagues. That all made so much sense to me right up until it didn’t. Of course, the pandemic changed everything when it came to working from home. I didn’t have a choice on whether I was going to work from home or not. The company closed the offices and we were all sent home to work inside our own air conditioning. I will say that it was tough at first. It was hard to get a rhythm and it was hard not to find distractions everywhere in my home. It was also tough to deal with our thermostat setting. We live in a region where heat and humidity are a big deal and we have to be careful about the thermostat setting. If we let the air conditioning just go hog wild, we’ll end up with enormous utility bills. And that first summer was a challenge for sure. But then I really got into working from home and decided to stay working remotely once the office was back up. However, once I made working from home permanent, I made it really permanent. I cleared out a guest room and had a ductless heat pump put in there along with all the office equipment I’ll need to do my work. I can’t imagine working anywhere else but home now!
