The basement was usually freezing while the people I was with and I were in the Winter months, so it wasn’t a suitable living space separate from heat.
One of the smartest decisions that I ended up making as a family was giving my youngest child her own living room and bathroom in the basement; Our home didn’t have enough living rooms for all our children to have their own space, however not all of them were looking to have their own space and they were cheerful sharing with a sibling. My youngest oldest child however was desperate for privacy and she hated sharing a room. We weren’t planning on moving in the near future, so our spouse and I tried to suggest ways to supply our child her own living room separate from adding a current addition. The basement was partially finished, however there was another half that needed to be finished as well. We decided to finish the rest of the basement and start to make a new space for our daughter! There was plenty of space to create a mediocre living room and a full bathroom. The space would be perfect, the people I was with and I just needed to add a source of heat. The previously finished space in the basement had a ductless mini split method to keep it warm, so the people I was with and I decided to do the same in the newly completed space. The ductless mini split method would run off of electricity and it would be simple for our child to control. The ductless method took up wall space, however we already knew that my child would care about controlling the temperature of her own room.
