The way things have been going with my mom and sister, I knew that I was going to have to get more involved.
It’s that time in life where my mom is in her mid 80’s and needs a lot more help.
I live 8 hours away and in a region where the main concern is HVAC cooling. But my mom and sister both deal with a winter that demands good HVAC heating. My sister and mother both use a propane heating system in their homes. And they practically live across the street from one another. That’s the rub. My mom leans on my sister far too much and feels like she’s owed whatever she asks for in time and energy from either one of us. I’m not leaving the sort of winter where the heat pump comes on only a handful of times. I’m done with snow, ice and cold winters. But my sister just couldn’t carry on alone with my mom. So I invited them down in the middle of summer to settle this thing a bit more. I wanted to be in my house with my HVAC cooling to show my mom that living here in the summer isn’t brutal. It’s actually quite fine and one can enjoy the outdoors in the mornings and the evenings. And I wanted to be on my home turf when I suggested that we upgrade the HVAC equipment in my mom’s house and then sell it. Then, I wanted my mom to move down here where I could look after her and give my sister a break. It was going to be a tough conversation so being in my own HVAC cooling was important.
