They will be able to install a second source of heating and cooling

Mom and dad are going to have to save even more money so that they will be able to install a second source of heating and cooling in addition to the lake house

My folks want to build an addition on their dwelling this year, but they know that their existing Heating, Ventilation and A/C system is not going to work when they put extra square footage onto the lake house. It’s one of those things that mom and dad have been talking about doing for a long time, but now it seems like it’s going to be much more involved than they originally thought it would be. My folks used to believe that it would be an easy thing to just build several extra walls onto the dwelling and throw in some carpet and some paint and after that they would be done. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case now. They found out that the Heating, Ventilation and A/C system that they currently have in the dwelling is just not going to be big enough to handle any extra space that we might build onto the lake house. The people who they are working with at the Heating, Ventilation and A/C company told them this news and they weren’t cheerful about it, to tell you the truth. My folks were thinking that the project was just going to be easy, straightforward, and sort of infancy. When they got the news from the Heating, Ventilation and A/C workers about the Heating, Ventilation and A/C system, that all changed. Now they are going to have to completely refigure their budget that they had worked out. Mom and dad are going to have to save even more money so that they will be able to install a second source of heating and cooling in addition to the lake house. It’s going to cost them a lot more.

We doesn't think that boilers are the best way to heat a cabin

The boiler is messed up at our cabin and we can’t figure out what to do about it.

We have never been fans of the boiler, to tell you the truth.

We don’t think that boilers are the best way to heat a cabin, and we would never have added a boiler in the dwelling ourselves if it hadn’t already been here when we moved in. We weren’t all that cheerful about the fact that this was the type of heater that was in the cabin when we obtained the property. However, we didn’t have that much of an option at that point. There weren’t any other cabins for sale in the section and we needed to find a location right away at that point. Otherwise, we would have waited until we found a dwelling with a high efficiency HVAC system instead of a boiler. At least with an electric heater or an oil furnace, we would know a few things about repairing it if we needed to. We don’t know a thing about boilers, though. To be honest, we are just a little bit afraid of them. We think that they are alarming because we have heard about them overheating and blowing up in particular cases. We would never have wanted a boiler in our dwelling because of that reason if nothing else. Anyway, we are going to have to call the local Heating, Ventilation and A/C company to come and repair the boiler for us, we guess. We are not going to mess around with it ourselves.

Hard to leave that HVAC

I’m not the sentimental sort. Or, at least I hadn’t been. But maybe I’m getting all sappy now because I’m getting older or something. Perhaps I’m just really a softie and have been all along. Either way, I didn’t really think that leaving the family home would be all that tough. We’d upgrade the HVAC equipment, replace the roof, do some landscaping and then cash that giant check after we sold the place. That’s sort of how it went by it was far from easy or straight forward. There were plenty of challenges with all the different projects we had going. There was no more coming home to put my feet up in the air conditioning after working all day. Once I got home, there was always something to be working on in order to get our home on the market. But it only made sense to sell that house. We’d been there since just after we got married. Actually, the heat pump that we just replaced was the first thing we did to this house when it was ours. There were plenty of other projects along the way but getting good quality heating and air was big time important. So it only made sense that getting the best in residential HVAC to sell the house would be what we had to do. And we had some amazing HVAC equipment installed by the HVAC professionals who have always taken care fo us. Along with that new residential HVAC came a bunch of HVAC technology that was completely new to me. While packing up and leaving the family home did indeed tug at my heart strings, it was the HVAC equipment that I really didn’t want to leave.

Adding ductless heat pump to our home

And the new space has a ductless heat pump for heating and cooling.

The idea of selling our house and property got a lot less appealing the longer we ended up living here. When we first bought this place, it was so we could get out of apartments with ancient HVAC equipment. We were about to be married and so finally, we had someone to partner with when it came to a downpayment on a home. But the idea was to just buy this place, fix it up and then sell it. We got such an amazing deal on this place simply because we were willing to take it in as is condition. Shoot, the land was worth what we paid and we got this little, two bedroom house sort of thrown in. It was definitely not much to look at when we first moved in. The first order of business back then was to get the sort of central air conditioning that we hadn’t had in our respective apartments. We got some of the best residential HVAC equipment you could buy a decade ago. And again, we went with that sort of heating and cooling equipment because we planned for that to be a big selling point. 11 years later and we have finally made it official by adding onto our home. We’re not going anywhere no matter what we can make on this house. But we did want a bit more space and another bathroom that was big and had all the amenities. We definitely got that for sure. And the new space has a ductless heat pump for heating and cooling. It’s absolutely incredible the quality heating and air that comes out of that little, ductless heat pump. We are so pleased with how everything turned out. And we’re also really pleased that we’re here for the duration.

Ductwork cleaning was a Spring gift

You know those gifts you get from people where you sort of scratch your head? Yea, I think we’ve all gotten them before. Mainly, I see them from relatives who chose something just to be able to say they did. I can’t tell you how many times I got the same cowboy wallet for Christmas from the same relative. And I was in college at the time. But I’d never been given the present of HVAC service. This was a new one for me. Yet, I still did plenty of head scratching after all the obligatory thank yous. It was actually a gift I received this past Christmas at the office party. We all normally have a sort of secret Santa thing going where we get something nice but not too expensive for each other. I was given a coupon for free ductwork cleaning from a colleague. This guy is the sort who really doesn’t get into the spirit of giving. I’ve seen the other offerings over the year. And I’m sure my coupon for ductwork cleaning was full on regifting or it was a freebie from the HVAC company. My wife just laughed her head off the whole way home from the Christmas party. Easily, I had the worst gift of all and my wife couldn’t stop laughing. I too thought it was a hoot. But when I called for the air conditioning tune up in late March, I thought I’d make an appointment to use the ductwork cleaning and ductwork resealing coupon. Turns out, this was a Spring gift that I was not expecting at all. I can’t believe the difference in our indoor air quality once the ductwork cleaning was done. And I can expect to save a wad of money on air conditioning costs thanks to the added efficiency from the ductwork resealing.

Sump pump

I bought my house during the dry season.

With very little rain, the water table is especially low at that time of year.

The property showed no indications of any water damage, so I wasn’t worried. A home inspection revealed no concerns with flooding. Six months later, there was three feet of water in my basement. The combination of snow melt and torrential downpours created lots of problems. My entire backyard was underwater. The flooding of the basement caused a great deal of mess, expense and destruction. The dirty water ruined the rug, a couch, a television, a treadmill and my washer and dryer. The moisture led to issues with mold and mildew growth and an unpleasant musty smell. I called a licensed plumber to pump out the basement and provide a recommendation. He suggested that I install a sump pump. A sump pump works to move water from the basement to the exterior of the home. It sits inside a pit or basin carved below the surface of the basement floor. Running the sump pump effectively kept the basement nice and dry. I replaced all of the damaged furniture, electronics and appliances. A year later, when the area once again experienced storms, the power failed. Because the sump pump runs on electricity, it never started up. My basement filled with water. I was very angry and discouraged. I called a different plumber who told me that I needed to invest into a back-up sump pump that operates on battery power. I have invested a small fortune into keeping my basement dry.
