Winter preparations are essential, especially with Heating and A/C

I’d much rather be prepared than caught with my pants down when severe winter weather arrives.

  • This is what motivates me to prepare for bad weather before the season arrives.

It’s too late to deal with heating problems when the thermometer is already buried in snow! So, I work through the summer and fall to prepare for the coming weeks ahead. We have a splendid, reliable gas furnace that efficiently heats our home. If, for some reason, there’s something wrong with it, I’d want time to fix it and not have to order an emergency heating repair. The gas furnace does a good job for us, but we also have another heating source for backup – an old-school, natural source, a wood stove. I also have a plastic shell that goes over our HVAC, which keeps falling ice and the weight of snow off its delicate parts, and off the fan.

Healthy air with help from the HVAC!

Enjoying healthy, refreshing air was part of the deal, or so I thought.

In my mind, indoor air was clean because it was in a clean home, not next to a smoking factory.

That’s how little I understood indoor air quality and HVAC equipment, and I thought the HVAC was cleaning the air for us. That’s what an air filter is for, right? Last year, I learned I was wrong. First, I learned the air filter wasn’t cleaning the air. The filter I was using only protected the HVAC equipment. I needed to buy a HEPA filter. Then, I learned how important clean indoor air is to your health. That was also a shock. Clean indoor air is incredibly important to respiratory health and the immune system. I was amazed I could change for the better with a small change to my HVAC equipment. Excitedly, I spent my money on a HEPA filter to attain the kind of air one needs!

I decided to teach my nephew how to take care of the HVAC system

My nephew was never gregarious in his life.

He never had the desire to go hang out with friends or play basketball at the playgrounds.

His father didn’t really take him places either, so I stepped in. Don’t get me wrong, I did speak to his father about it ahead of time and he said I could hang out with my nephew as much as I wanted. So it was cool. I figured I would just teach him important skills in life and how to enjoy himself and keep in good shape. I think it’s important to remain active in life so you don’t just wither away. I have been a successful HVAC professional in my days and I figured my nephew might appreciate the same knowledge. I started him out on basic stuff when he was very young like energy saving tips. It was a trip how he would tell his parents that they needed to use more energy efficient light bulbs. My brother wasn’t happy about that at first until he saw how much they were able to save on the energy bills. Then I got him into changing air filters and cleaning the inner workings of the HVAC equipment safely. I made certain to drill in his head to have the HVAC equipment shut off whenever working on it. He learned about cleaning the outdoor A/C condenser unit and my brother appreciated that they hardly ever had to contact the HVAC professionals except for tune-ups and ductwork cleaning. I didn’t want him working on ductwork cleaning because of all the dangerous contaminants, but he’ll probably learn more about that when he’s an official HVAC professional one day.

The window A/C unit just wasn’t cutting it anymore

For a long while, I have been using a single window A/C unit in my garage.

It’s basically my shop space because I do all sorts of projects in the garage and all of my tools are kept in there.

This past summer, I came to realize that I couldn’t handle the severe temperatures when I was working in the garage. The window A/C unit just wasn’t cutting it, even after I worked on adding extra insulation to the garage space. So I ended up calling the local HVAC company to see what kind of HVAC I could have installed there. An HVAC professional came out and said he would suggest going with a single zone ductless mini split. He said not only would it provide the ideal amount of cooling on the hot summer days, but it would be highly energy efficient and would also provide heating in the winter. Well, this sounded way better than trying to get by with a window A/C unit and a portable heater. When I got the estimate for how much the installation would be, it was a little more pricey than I had anticipated. Fortunately my friend told me that I could install this type of HVAC system on my own without the need of an HVAC professional. He said it was easy and he already installed a multi zone HVAC at his home with no issues. I ordered the single zone ductless mini split and he was right, it was simple to install. The secret to the DIY was the fact that the line sets were filled with pre compressed refrigerant.
