I wanted to build a website for my HVAC company, but I wasn’t sure where to begin.

• My wife bought me a book about website creation for dummies, but I was too dumb to understand what they were talking about.

I spent two weeks working on my website, but I got nowhere. That two weeks didn’t include the week I spent trying to understand the website creation for dummies handbook. My grandson came home from school and curled up on the chair next to my computer. He wanted to know what I was doing? I told him I was trying to create an HVAC website for my HVAC company. He told me that was an ambitious job, but he was sure he could help me do it. My grandson was only twelve, and I did not know how he was going to what I couldn’t. He told me that the first thing I had to do was get rid of the books. They were old and had nothing to do with what I wanted done. These were websites that were once using when AOL was the only social media forum. He asked me to move, and I watched as his fingers flew over the keyboard. Within minutes, he had the beginning of an HVAC website. He told me he had learned little about SEO or advertising, but he could help with the bare bones of the website. He suggested I take his ideas and call an online web development company. They would have an HVAC specialist who could make the website come alive and beg for people to ask for more information.

His brother wanted him to look at the air conditioning unit and see if it could be fixed.

I walked into the house last week, and there was a broken air conditioning unit sitting in my living room. I had told no one to get the AC unit out of storage, and I didn’t know why it was out. I talked to my son, but he didn’t seem to know anything about it. My daughter told me that if I had questions about the AC unit; I should talk to dad. My husband wasn’t home, so how was I going to talk to him? All I knew was that the window AC unit was smashed in pieces and taking up residence on my new living room carpet. I went back to my son and told him that since the air conditioner was in the living room; I had to deduce that someone had put it there. That someone had to be someone in our house. He swore he didn’t touch the air conditioning unit. My daughter swore she never touched the air conditioning unit. I finally called my husband and asked what he knew about the broken window air conditioning unit that was sitting in our living room. He said his brother had brought it over and put it on the table. His brother wanted him to look at the air conditioning unit and see if it could be fixed. Okay. My husband was an HVAC technician and his help was often required, but why was it smashed? About that time, our bruiser mastiff came bounding into the room looking like an innocent. He sniffed the air conditioning unit, laid down and hid his eyes in his paws. I knew it had to be someone in this house that had smashed the AC unit.

I haven’t talked to many people who tell me money isn’t the issue when they need a new HVAC system.

I don’t know what they’re talking about when they say this.

If money isn’t the issue, why aren’t they ordering the new HVAC when they need it? Why put off installing something that could cost less to run and would heat and cool more efficiently? I would think money is the issue. I know how I felt when I realized I needed a new HVAC system for my house. My ductwork was shot, and it was going to cost an arm and a leg to purchase new. I was an HVAC, so I didn’t need to pay for the installation and I got a nice discount on the HVAC equipment. It was expensive even with the discount and free installation. I wasn’t sure I could take that kind of money out of the bank and not watch my family suffer for it. I thought twice and discussed it for several weeks before my wife told me we were going to suffer if we didn’t have the new HVAC system installed. I didn’t want to have my wife and kids sick because we had horrible heating or air conditioning. I called my boss and asked if we could take the payment out of my check in monthly increments. He told me I couldn’t quit my job until I paid it back, which made me laugh. I had no intentions of working for anyone but his HVAC company. Three months later, my HVAC system was paid for, and I was glad I bought it. I saved money in the long run.

As I step outside of Mrs.

Swanson’s house to walk across the street to Charlie’s house I start to think about why I started my own HVAC business with my brother.

The time I had with my family on vacation was amazing and I want more of that. I don’t want to be on call to figure out what is wrong with whoever’s air conditioning system or thermostat issue. I want more time with my kids and I want to have nights off where I don’t have to worry about being called on an emergency HVAC issue. What I thought about when I was on vacation is that we need to hire 1 or more HVAC repairmen. It’s wild that we have been doing this on our own for several years now and we don’t have another person to work under us. I plan on seeing my brother tomorrow to discuss this matter because I’m exhausted. I just got back from a 2 week vacation, barely put my luggage away and already have been on a call to help Mrs. Swanson. Immediately after Charlie wants me to come over and discuss a smart thermostat. I’m going to be livid if he already bought one and expects me to install it now. It won’t take me long to install one thought but he always buys things without really questioning why he bought whatever it is in the first place. As I walk up his stairs, I see him standing behind the screen door and he said well I already bought a smart thermostat, maybe you can take a look?

I’m currently in the process of working on Mrs. Swanson’s furnace. She called me about an hour ago saying her furnace was making a ticking noise and she wasn’t getting any heat. Of Course, I’m glad to help her but I’m still recovering from a long drive back home from a 2 week vacation I just had with my wife and kids. I didn’t expect to be on call as an HVAC technician as soon as I got back home from vacation. I really thought I’d have time to unpack, relax and just watch tv until I went to bed tonight. I’m surprised that my brother, John, who is my twin brother, also HVAC technician who owns the heating and cooling business with me, hasn’t called me yet asking how my vacation went. Regardless, I’m here working on Mrs. Swansons furnace and I figured out the issue. The spark ignitor went bad so it was an easy replacement to fix. As I was finishing up putting tools in my truck, the neighbor Charlie came up to me and asked if I knew anything about smart thermostats. I told him that I can answer any questions he may have. But first, let me tell Mrs. Swanson that I completed her repair. Mrs. Swanson was thankful and wanted to have a small conversation about my vacation but I told her we will have to have that conversation another time. I have Charlie, your neighbor outside wanting to discuss a smart thermostat. I’m sure he is thinking about getting one installed. I really don’t want to do any other jobs today.

I sound totally nuts in the songs our band makes, oh my gosh. Sometimes I wonder if I am losing my mind or something, with the crazy stuff I do when we play songs. But I guess you need to push the limits, and try to reach into places that you have never gone before, to see what comes out of it. A lot of my music comes from the pain in my life, but I try to turn it into joy somehow so that it makes other people happy. I did this with comedy in local businesses for 15 years, but I grew tired of playing in climate controlled places and wanted to switch things up and play music outside in the streets. Comedy in the streets doesn’t go over so well, but music seems to work very well and we also make some decent money playing. The HVAC tech at the HVAC business told us that if we keep on improving like we have been the past year that we will hit the bigtime in less than two years. I don’t know about that but I do like singing and playing drums in the band, so let’s see what happens. As long as we have a fireplace or heating during the winters I can play year round, and in the summertime a good portable a/c system outside would help keep us cool in those beach bars that are going to pay us well to perform. I am pretty excited about summer coming and all the tourists coming into town.
