We had been looking for a bigger house for more than a year.

The children were not thrilled by the idea of moving since that meant leaving their friends behind and joining a new school.

We were not in a hurry to settle for any house, and we wanted our forever home to meet all our expectations, or at least most of them. We finally moved to a charming neighborhood. The home had five bedrooms with a backyard big enough to fit a swimming pool and still have plenty of space for our three children to play on. The icing on the cake was that the house had a new heating system and one of the most beautiful fireplaces I had ever seen. We called a heating technician from a heating business not far from the neighborhood, who confirmed the information. Before we found the house, I never thought it would be possible to find a home on sale with a new heat pump. When the realtor told us that she had a surprise for us, I would never have imagined that this was it. Our last house had a furnace as the main heating device the local heating dealer installed when our first child was born. The ductwork was older than the electric heater; during every heater maintenance, duct sealing had to be done. The HVAC professional had advised us to consider installing a new home heating unit because we would spend so much on repair and other services by the heating industry. The smart thermostat, however, was in good condition. A good heating company manufactured it. Our new home was the perfect fit for our family, not to mention the excellent help with indoor comfort. With the fantastic heat pump installation, we sought to learn more about heating to take better care of it.

It was getting hotter by the minute, and given how cold it was outside, and I was almost sure I was developing a fever.

• A fellow workmate came to bring me some documents and commented on how the temperature was rising by the minute.

The minute he said that I knew I was not the problem, so I headed to the smart thermostat. I am not a heating technician, but I tried to reset it, and unfortunately, the temperature started rising again after a few minutes. I was unsure if the maintenance team had called for help, but I went ahead and called the heating dealer that generally did the heating maintenance at the office. The heating business took their time because the HVAC professional arrived around lunchtime, but they had informed me that every tech they had was out in the field. After a thorough inspection of the heat pump, he found the problem. I accompanied the repairman to learn more about heating and other things I needed to learn about the heating industry. The heating repair took a shorter time than when I had my whole home heating serviced. I was glad we finally had help with indoor comfort. That day after work, I drove two hours to my parents to spend the weekend with them because I had not seen them for a while, and I also wanted to see the much-talked-about new heating equipment. They were so excited that they called via video call on the day of the heat pump installation and on the day they reached the heating company to install a fireplace in their home. I was so happy to see that they were so happy now. Earlier that year, they had sold their big home in favor of a smaller house since it was now just the two.

I woke up early that day since I had a presentation at work.

The presentation could earn me a promotion which meant more money.

While I was getting ready for work, the furnace stopped working as I set the temperature with the smart thermostat. My landlady had told me it was relatively new heating equipment because the heat pump installation happened only three years ago. I had no time to investigate the issue, so I called her and let her know what had happened with the heating device. She was equally shocked and promised to have the heating technician fix the system before I returned in the evening. I told myself that if the heat pump were not fixed by the time I got home, I would use the gas fireplace in the sitting room. The landlady told me how the HVAC professional did their due diligence on the device that had caused the malfunction from several heating dealers. They finally found a heating business online that replaced the worn-out equipment, and they were able to finish the repairs. The heating maintenance exercise took almost half the day. When I came home at 5 PM, I bumped into the experts at the lift. I knew they were HVAC technicians from the heating company logo on their overalls. Though the landlady kept her promise, she and the specialist had a long day trying to uphold the pledge. I was grateful to have helped with indoor comfort once more. I also need to learn more about heating and the heating industry to take better care of the whole home heating system. The presentation also went well, and I hope to get promoted soon. My bosses were very impressed with my presentation and commended me for it.

We were about to enter one of the longest weekends of the year.

It would be a five-day weekend because of two holidays.

I was looking forward to having a relaxing weekend with my friends. They would be coming over to my house for the entire weekend. It was winter, so there was not much to do outside apart from dinner and maybe a lunch here and there. One of my friends is a chef, so we were not so worried about having excellent food while they stayed. I did not want anything to go wrong, so I had the heating technician from the heating company run quality heater maintenance on the equipment. The tune-up was a good idea because the HVAC professional conducted serious repairs after discovering several worn-out components that made the heat pump inefficient. The specialists commended me on maintaining the excellent condition of the new heating equipment since the heat pump installation three years ago. I upgraded to a smart thermostat to help me better operate the whole-home heating system and to help with indoor comfort. Each time I learned more about heating. I also had the heating dealer deliver air filters. When my friends came over, it was snowing outside, but the quality of comfort inside the house was splendid. We had the best weekend, and the convenience of one of the best equipment in the heating industry improved everything. Some of my friends asked for contacts in the heating business when they saw how well my system functioned. The tech managed to snag several referrals. I even showed off my newfound knowledge about HVAC systems.

When my place of business reopened after more than 18 months of me working from the central air conditioning of home, I was so ready.

Working from home was a necessary evil and I understood that for sure.

But I really didn’t enjoy the experience. I was always moving from one place to another with my laptop in order to get my work done. The wife and kids were also cooped up inside the quality heating and air of home at the time. So there were many motivations for me when it came to getting back to that zone controlled HVAC in the office. My return to that perfect commercial HVAC was short lived. I knew that the company had struggled through the pandemic and I was glad that they were even able to remain solvent. But in order to continue, the company had to make some cuts. Of course, that came with layoffs during 2020 and I felt really lucky that I didn’t get cut. So I was kind of stunned when I came back to the office and within a week, I to was relieved of my position. I got a severance package which helped me while I was able to process what was happening. And then it dawned on me that I could go out and compete against the company as an independent consultant. So I took some of that money from the severance package and bought a storage unit from the home improvement store. Once I had it wired, I had the HVAC company come out and put a ductless heat pump in there so I had good heating and cooling. And these days, I could not be more happier with my home office and being my own boss.

I have a daughter who is a total unicorn.

The fact that she is the baby also sort of sets her apart in my eyes.

But it’s her personality that really makes her so special. Yet with all her uniqueness, there comes a lot sensitivity. She’s an emotional sort who is always trying to help or serve others. And that can come with some tough lessons. But she’s also sensitive to the slightest change in thermostat settings. And while all I could do was support her when it came to the emotional sensitivity, I could actually do something about the physical sensitivity. I couldn’t do much about where she went to school and that heating and cooling equipment. That little girl goes out the door with all manner of layers each day as she heads off to school. That’s something I can’t really control. But I can control this thermostat situation in our home. So I called the HVAC company to inquire about zone controlled HVAC. I was very pleased to find out that I didn’t have to replace our entire HVAC system in order to get zone controlled HVAC. Instead, all I had to do was have the HVAC technician come out and tweak our existing heating and cooling equipment in order to get zone controlled HVAC. Once the heating and cooling upgrade was complete, our home had six different zones. And I made sure that my youngest had a thermostat in her room. It’s made a big difference for her and I’m just so glad that I could do something that made her a bit more comfortable in this world.
