Last week, I left my beach house for a few afternoons to spend time with my family for Thanksgiving.

This trip is something that I take every year. So, it’s nothing that I am not used to. Typically, before I leave for my trip, I make sure that I complete particular tasks in my home. I always remove my garbage, water my plants, plus I always adjust the temperature on my thermostat. I adjust the temperature because I don’t want my Heating plus A/C component to run while my beach house is empty. However, for some unusual reason, I left without increasing the thermostat. This means that my Heating plus A/C was on for the entire time I was away. I was only away for a few afternoons which wasn’t a sizable deal, but if I was going to be gone for longer, then it would’ve really been an issue. After complaining to my sibling Jason about this, he mentioned that I should suppose about upgrading to a Smart thermostat. He explained that I could control the Smart thermostat from somewhere as long as I have a Wi-Fi affixion. Additionally, he mentioned that I could also program my holiday time into the thermostat. I could also program when my Heating plus A/C component needs service. I had never considered upgrading to a Smart thermostat but hearing about all the benefits I was instantly interested in getting one, but well, after I returned home, I searched the internet plus found a Smart thermostat that best fits my needs. The thermostat will be here in a couple of afternoons plus I can’t wait to use it.

When I bought my new furnace, I had a two-year unconditional warranty and a third year that was conditional. I added the extended warranty, hoping I would get service when I needed it, and it wouldn’t cost me as much money. I had five years of warranty, and nothing happened to the furnace. The servicing was done regularly, and the furnace was always in excellent condition. I was changing the air filters, and I even had my ductwork cleaned two years after having the furnace installed. It was two days after the extended warranty expired that I knew there was a problem with my furnace. I called the HVAC company, thinking I still had a few days on the warranty, and asked them to do service. They couldn’t send anyone to the house for three days. The three days ended up being nearly a week. The HVAC technician finally arrived and looked at the furnace. They were minor repairs, but I had to pay for them. I asked about the warranty, and he told me it had expired. It hadn’t expired when I called about the work on the furnace, and he shrugged. He said I would need to take that up with the HVAC company. The warranty had already expired when the HVAC technician got there. I paid the bill and was going to call the HVAC company, but my wife stayed my hand. She said to let it go. The bill was less than $100. She said we had enough money to pay the bill, and she didn’t think the work the HVAC tech had done, would be covered under the warranty.

My father always bought a maintenance repair plan when the last one was about to expire. He taught all of us kids the importance of having a maintenance and repair plan. When I bought my house, I immediately asked the HVAC company about a maintenance and repair plan for our HVAC system. I wanted to know I would get yearly maintenance and they would make minor repairs, if they were needed, at the time of servicing. I bought a two-year HVAC maintenance and repair plan. I liked that just one service was the cost of a two-year plan that covered both the air conditioning and the furnace. About a month after purchasing the plan, I still hadn’t received the paperwork that went with it. I called the HVAC company and they told me I should have received the paperwork when I bought the service plan. I agreed that I should have received it, but I didn’t, and I wanted the paperwork. I wanted to know all the services I was eligible in case I need some work done. She promised to send me a copy of the agreement, and I should have it in about three days. I waited three days, but the agreement didn’t arrive. I still didn’t have it almost two weeks later, and I called the HVAC company again. When she said she would send me a copy, I told her not to. I was going to stop at the HVAC company on my way home from work, and she could give it to me then. I thanked her and hung up before she could tell me not to stop in.

When I bought my home, I knew there were some problems with the appliances, and the furnace was about fifteen years old.

The realtor suggested I buy a home warranty plan that would cover the everything in the house. For most repairs, you made a small payment, and they did everything else. I wasn’t planning on my furnace breaking down before anything else, but that was how it worked. I had to call the home warranty company and talk to them about the furnace. I explained what was going on with the furnace, and told them I was going to call the HVAC company. I had to use their service center if I wanted them to pay for the furnace. I had to pay $200 up front, and then depending on what was wrong, I would have at least 10% copay for all parts and service. I asked if they were serious, and the woman asked if I had read my home warranty contract. This was nothing like what the realtor had told me. She said most people paid about $30 and had free replacement. The home warranty company said the free replacement was with a use furnace of the same age. I planned on calling the realtor in the morning, but I was going to call the HVAC company and have them look at the furnace. The home warranty was a farce, but I knew I would get a new furnace with the HVAC company, and not a used one.

For the last couple of weeks, I had noticed how much cooler the house was feeling, even when the thermostat was set a bit higher.

The humidifier had quit working, and it was always dry in the house.

I called the HVAC company, and we talked about everything that was wrong, and they said they would have an HVAC technician to the house in about three days. They couldn’t pinpoint a time until the following day, but it would be in the afternoon. I was wondering if this was set in stone because I worked afternoons. I called my sister and asked if she would house sit for me while I was working, and she could be there for the HVAC technician. She agreed and I was okay with anything the HVAC company threw at me. The day the HVAC technician was to arrived, I called my sister to remind her about coming over. Ten minutes before I had to leave, she showed up. She was dressed like she was going out on a date, but she said she just wanted to look good for the HVAC technician. I was only at work for an hour when the phone rang. She said the HVAC technician wanted to know if I had life insurance for my furnace. I asked her to repeated what she had just said. She said, he asked if my furnace had life insurance. I assumed I needed a new furnace, and almost cried. She laughed and said she was just kidding. My thermostat wasn’t working properly and all I needed was a new thermostat. I was going to throttle her when I got home.

It’s amazing how warm the sun can make you feel, even on a cold winter day such as today.

As long as the wind isn’t blowing too much you can feel pretty warmed up from the sun on a bright cloudless day. The radiative heating that the sun gives can warm things up quite well, and this is really noticeable when the sun goes behind a cloud for a bit. I was out on the beach yesterday trying to get a little sun and I noticed that each time the sun went behind a cloud I would feel much colder. The sun is really far from the earth but it still acts as a radiant heater, very similar to the portable space heaters you would buy at a local business. The sun is much more powerful than these heaters, but the fact that it is 93 million miles away makes it very similar to these types of radiant heaters found in many homes. I would love to get some solar heating panels installed on my rooftop to help cut the costs of heating in my flat. I need to go to the local contractor and ask them what it would cost to get solar installed on my roof. I live in a big building and the whole roof is exposed to the sun quite well and could serve as a good base for some solar panels. I could get rid of my hot water heater and also heat the rooms with the power of the sun. I wish every house had them.
