I have had my eye on the house on the hill for over a decade now, then i have always lusted over that house.

It overlooks the ocean, has amazing gardens you can see from the freeway, and has these beautiful decorative windows, however when I drive by I can see the lights on in the house and I wish it was mine, and that is why I was gleeful to learn that the house was listed up for sale.

I doubted that my fantastic friend and I could afford it but I arranged for a walk through anyway. In person, this house was even more amazing than I had imagined. The decorative windows are beautiful from the inside, but however, the one feature of the house I didn’t like was the fact that it had no central heating or cooling, then none at all. In fact, it just had baseboard boilers spread throughout the house and 2 window air conditioner units. When I asked the realtor why it had no central Heating and A/C system she told me that the walls, ceiling, and flooring were not built right for HVAC duct… Still, there is such a thing as underfloor heating and cooling, and yet, I would dislike to tear up those decorative wood floors. However, I heard about this Heating and A/C system called a ductless mini split system. Apparently you just have to drill a few holes in the walls and run some hoseing through them. I would absolutely look into the opportunity of getting that done if I could afford this house. If I could afford the house, I still don’t know that I would buy it if there was no way to get an Heating and A/C system installed. I like the looks of the house but I want my creature comforts too.

I promised the teenagers my associate and I would go to the zoo over summer time trip but after that I kept putting it off, and finally, September rolled around plus there was only 1 week left before they start university again.

You might not think that a 5 plus a 6 year old would remember but they did. There was no way I could weasel out of going to the zoo; Unluckyly, my associate and I only had a short time left for our visit plus it was tepid plus humid with a chance of thunderstorms. That is respected for this area. I undoubtedly really didn’t want to go to the zoo plus sit around without air conditioning all day. I am happy I found an alternative. There is this little nature center nearby that has all sorts of local animals. The best part is that it is almost all indoors. Only the otters are outdoors. Everything else inside with climate control. So I took the teenagers to the nature center. They complained because, apparently, it wasn’t the zoo my associate and I normally go to. Thankfully, I was able to convince them that the air conditioned nature center was a odd sort of zoo. My kid undoubtedly enjoyed the snapping turtles, my child enjoyed the otters of course, plus I enjoyed the air conditioning. I was super comfortable indoors. The humidity was kept in check, plus my associate and I all had a fantastic time. That is, until my associate and I got back home. Once my associate and I got house I noticed that our central air conditioning had stopped working. So I still had to deal with the heat plus humidity until the air conditioning repairman came. Thankfully the teenagers enjoyed watching him work. I, on the other hand, could undoubtedly use a nap.

I was concerned when the kids started going back to school.

With Covid 19 going around I knew it wasn’t safe.

There was a homeschool option but that didn’t work out well for me last semester. The kids learned nothing and I missed a lot of work. I decided to leave the education up to the professionals. But, of course, last month James came home sick. We got the test and he tested positive for Covid 19. I just knew my other 2 kids were going to get sick too and that it was only a matter of time before I got sick as well. But do you know what? No one besides James ended up getting sick. I know it is unheard of. I put credit where credit is due. I think no one else got sick because of our HVAC system. When this whole virus started I looked into it and then I had a bunch of work done on our HVAC system. I got an air filter installed with a strong MERV rating, I added a few HEPA filters to the house, and I got a few humidifiers too. I have kept these things all working over the past year. I think that is why no one else got sick. Oh, and I also disinfected like crazy. Anyhow, James recovered completely and is now, finally back in school. Hopefully none of the rest of the kids get sick from school now. But, if they do, I know we’ll be just fine thanks to our HVAC system. At least, I hope that is true again next time.

My mom was staying with us this past week and we had a lot of fun together. She has a little dog that she brings everywhere. So of course she brought the dog with her on the plane when she visited us. We didn’t mind. The dog is well behaved and quiet. However, I woke up in the middle of the night the first night that my mom was visiting. I felt very warm and uncomfortable. My first thought was that our air conditioner had stopped working. I crept out into the living room and checked the thermostat. Sure enough it was 78 degrees in the house. Then I noticed that someone had turned the thermostat up to those settings. I assumed it was a mistake of some sort so I cranked the air conditioner back down with a thermostat setting of 70 degrees and I went to bed. In the morning my mom asked me why I had turned the air conditioner back down. She said she had turned the air conditioner up because her little dog was freezing cold at night. Mom was upset to wake up this morning and find her little dog shivering cold once again. Well I had no idea the dog was so sensitive to the cold, air conditioned air. I also knew that we couldn’t have the house so warm at night or we wouldn’t get any sleep. Ultimately, I decided that we would have to close the vents in my mom’s room and give her a space heater for the dog. My mom was happy to stay in the heated room. After that night, we all slept comfortably.

The last two houses we have rented had mold in their HVAC systems.

The mold was primarily in the ductwork and it was gross.

It also made the whole family sick. We were diligent with keeping on top of the HVAC maintenance and everything but these were super old houses with super old HVAC systems. That is why I was worried when we decided to buy our own home. I thought it might have a moldy HVAC system too and we would have to pay thousands of dollars to repair it. You can’t just pick up and move when you own a home like you can when you rent one. We looked at a bunch of houses before settling on one that we all loved. Each kid will have their own room now. It has a remodeled kitchen and a fireplace. But the best part is that the house does not have a forced air HVAC system. So no ductwork or parts that can get moldy. Instead it has a ductless mini split system. All of the main working components are outside. The inside parts are up on the wall and not in a utility closet. There is no ductwork. It only has small hoses that lead from the outside to the inside. The whole ductless mini split system could be inspected by us daily if we wanted to make sure there is no mold. I really like that. Additionally, we hired someone to come into the house and use a mold detector already and they said the house is clean. I hope we get the house.

I was really nervous about leaving my 4 month old puppy with my parents for a week while my husband and I went on vacation.

• The puppy is not trained very well yet.

She is doing good with house breaking but she still panics when she is left in her crate. Still, my parents said that they were happy to watch her. Of course I called them as soon as my plane landed to see how my puppy was doing. They said she was fine. I kept calling all week and each time I was told my puppy was very well behaved and was having no trouble going in her crate. I thought my parents were lying to me to be nice but they swore she really was doing great in her crate. When I got back and picked her up I found out why: my parents had put the dog’s crate in their kitchen which has heated floors. I guess my puppy felt warm, safe, and secure in her crate on those heated floors. Unfortunately my house doesn’t have heated floors so she went right back to crying in her crate at my house. The only room with heated floors in my room is the master bathroom. I put the crate in there and it worked like a charm. She was quiet all day. The only problem is that there is no room for anything but the crate in the bathroom now. I might need to spring and get heated floors in the living room or kitchen now. Why not the whole house?
