I work in the plaza of a marina and I’ve never really been in that type of environment before.

It’s been interesting to really learn how a marina operates and what the work truly entails.

I spoke to a marina employee who said that their air conditioning had recently stopped working and how that was so problematic for them. Anyone not having air conditioning while working probably wouldn’t be happy, but because all of their employees work long hours outside, they really need the air conditioner to provide a cool environment for them. They practically begged an air conditioning company to come out and fix the air conditioner, but no one would agree to come the same day so they had to deal with it for a whole two days. I felt really bad because our cooling technician is awesome and probably would have come to their rescue had I known they were experiencing that issue. They were luckily able to get their air conditioner fixed and everyone was feeling happy again. It was nice to talk to the girl about it because she was really cool and I think I would get along with her well. It can sometimes be hard to find good quality people in the area that I live in, so I took a chance and asked her if she wanted to hang out. We made plans to grab lunch the following week and I have to admit that I am a bit nervous about it. We will have to talk about things that aren’t work-related!

I work really closely with small businesses and I love doing this work.

I am an air conditioning and heating technician who primarily helps small businesses get their HVAC systems up and running efficiently.

Some businesses opt for other options such as ductless mini splits, but the mass majority of people typically opt for central cooling and heating systems for plenty of reasons. One thing I always recommend to new business owners is to go ahead and set up a service plan after the initial visit. Service plans are necessary because it helps us maintain the heating and cooling equipment overtime before anything seriously breaks and requires intensive and expensive repair. I’ve had some business owners accuse me of trying to squeeze money out of them for regular service visits, but it is much cheaper for me to come and inspect the A/C rather than show up for an unexpected repair that they need done as soon as possible. Most cooling technicians are in demand, so for us to drop everything and tend to your business, there is typically a larger fee associated with that. I definitely think that most people are receptive to the idea of maintaining their investments because they spend so much money installing it along with all of their other equipment when they are first getting their business up and running. It’s actually really cool to be there in the beginning and see the process of their business come into fruition. I love seeing how creative people can be with their spaces and how their unique touches can make it look and feel so different.

My job is to make the thermostat decision process easier and seamless for you! You will first want to decide if you plan to have a dial thermostat or digital thermostat. Most modern businesses opt for a digital thermostat for the ease of use and accessibility to spot the temperature from a further distance. If you decide you want a digital thermostat, you’ll want to decide if you want a programmable thermostat or a SMART thermostat. Programmable thermostats will allow you to program the temperature for the day or create default settings directly through the device. SMART thermostats will be a bit more intuitive to you and your business needs, and provide you with access to control the thermostat from your cell phone. Having yet another app on your phone may not seem appealing, but it may be worth it if you want the most amount of ease for your thermostat process. Making small decisions like this for your business might not seem like a big deal, but it’s really those small things on a regular basis that can make a difference in the overall comfort of your customers or clients, as well as ease and accessibility for you and your employees. I always say that it’s the small things that make or break a business, so don’t overlook this step! My dad is an air conditioning and heating technician and I have definitely picked up on a few things over time.

I think a lot of people struggle with finding ways to heat their homes during the Winter without their energy bill skyrocketing too much.

When you live in a warm climate, you may not fully understand how your central heater works, so my dad has helped me learn how to educate people on ways to save energy with their central heater. Central heaters work really well when you aren’t fluctuating the temperature too much, so you should try to find a temperature that can comfortably and consistently sit throughout the day. Another way to save money on your heater is to ensure that the furnace filters and air filters are cleaned and replaced as needed. When the filters are clogged, it causes the heater to work extra hard to push forced air through and that will directly reflect only your energy bill. These tips may seem simple or self explanatory, but you would be surprised how much these tips can make a big difference. A lot of people don’t even know these simple strategies, so I try to explain them as if someone is brand new to the topic. I definitely think there is something we can learn about systems in our home. I know that I have a lot to learn about owning a home, so I’ll take all of the knowledge we can get. For example, I want a pool but know nothing about caring for one.

I’ve learned a lot about air conditioners and heaters over the years since my dad is an HVAC technician.

It’s definitely skills that have come in handy because I feel like all of the apartments I have lived in have different quirks when it comes to the cooling and heating equipment.

I remember living in one apartment where the heater started leaking a really weird and rank small from the air duct. I remember my dad providing some tips when heaters leak smells from the air ducts. One possible cause for the smell is that a small animal, like a mouse or frog, died inside of your air duct. I would hate to know that a dead animal is living inside of the air duct, so you should probably call an air conditioning technician to get it cleaned out. You should be getting your air ducts regularly cleaned out anyway, especially if you or someone in your home suffers with respiratory or sinus issues. I would even argue that households that have cats or dogs should get their air ducts cleaned more often simply because of the hair. I sometimes feel like a nerd harboring all of this knowledge, and worse, even taking pride in educating people about all of it. But these are really important things for homeowners and renters to know so that they feel comfortable taking charge of these maintenance tasks. I know that I have become a more confident renter since learning how these things need to be taken care of. The beauty of it is that anyone can learn!

When I walked into work at the beginning of the week, I immediately realized that the air conditioner was not working.

• The air conditioner usually has a distinct noise while it’s running, so I noticed that it was unusually quiet when I stepped into the store.

I checked our thermostat and it didn’t have any error messages on it. I went outside to reset the breaker because that usually fixes the problem when the air conditioner acts wonky. For some reason, the air conditioner didn’t come back on. I tried it one more time, and once I accepted defeat, I called the number for our HVAC technician. He wasn’t able to come until the following day, so we had to rent a portable air conditioner for the time being in order to ensure our clients were cool and comfortable. When he came the following day, he told us that one of the air conditioner parts had blown out and would need a full replacement. I’m glad that I don’t personally pay the bills for the business because that one small part costs hundreds of dollars to replace without the cost of labor included. I’m glad that we got it fixed quickly though because I hated the noise of the portable A/C unit. I work in a physical therapy studio with people who get dizzy lately and experience vertigo, so the last thing we want is for someone to experience heat exhaustion and completely fall out in our space. It can be scary sometimes, especially if people have to park far and walk to our studio.
