I started working at a really cool and eclectic coffee shop in my local neighborhood and I really love it so far.

During my last shift one of my coworkers mentioned that the ceiling was leaking, but I noticed that the leak she pointed to was directly underneath the large air duct that ran across the ceiling.

I immediately figured that it was probably the air duct that was experiencing a leak that was probably a result of a sealing issue. I’ve seen air ducts shaped like that experience sealing issues over time just because of the shape. The next time I see the owner in the shop, I’m going to ask him about the air conditioner and how he invests in its maintenance. I think it’s important for employees to know things like that so we know that the air conditioner is working while we are working long hours in the shop. I never really thought about things like this before, but ever since I’ve learned more about different air conditioning systems and common problems, I can’t help but notice things like that. It’s nice to have an observant eye and be able to try and problem solve before you actually take action. It helps you configure a plan that makes sense so that you don’t waste time or money. I’m sure that the coffee shop owner wants to do as little as possible to waste money, so hopefully a small conversation with him will help him get together a solid plan that will solve the issue so they no longer have to worry about a leak.

I’ve been on a good streak lately, but I guess something bad had to happen eventually to remind me of reality.

My air conditioner unexpectedly broke at the beginning of the work week, and it definitely didn’t seem like a small problem.

The air conditioner was making really weird sounds before it stopped working, and after it shut off, I noticed a weird smell coming from it. I had to go to work and couldn’t tend to the air conditioner right away, so I called an air conditioning company on my way there and set up an appointment. They didn’t have any availability until the following afternoon, so I had to spend a day without air conditioning in this ridiculous heat. Luckily I have a few fans at my house, so I was able to space them around to keep me cool for the night. When I met the air conditioning technician the following day, he confirmed that it was not going to be a cheap fix. I ended up spending hundreds of dollars to fix the air conditioner, and it was really just for one part that needed to be replaced. I hate that air conditioning parts are so expensive, but I also understand the wear and tear they undergo over the years of usage. Having to pay for things like that is always such an annoyance when they come around, but I’m glad that I am able to afford those things as they come up. I wasn’t always in that position, so I’m really grateful for what I’ve created.

I got home from work at the end of a very long week.

When I got home I realized the long week was only going to continue because my air conditioner seemed to have stopped working while I was away.

It was really hot that day so I checked the thermostat when I walked in and it read more than ninety degrees inside of my loft. I felt terrible that my cats had been locked up inside of the house with no air conditioning for who knows how long! I immediately tried to get in touch with an air conditioner company which proved to be a big challenge since it was the end of business hours on a Friday evening. I was hoping I wouldn’t need to call an emergency air conditioning company because I know that would cost me a lot more money. I finally got in contact with a company, but they weren’t going to be able to send out a technician until the following day, almost twenty-four hours away. I had to set up some fans around the house, but it was so hot and I was worried about my cats, so I decided to pick up a portable air conditioner for the night. Luckily I was able to rent it so I knew I wouldn’t need to invest too much money for a temporary solution. I was able to have the company come out the following day and get it fixed, so the rest of the weekend I just enjoyed the calm and cool environment.

I love going to music festivals and have been attending for many years, but I personally hate attending festivals in the hot summer months.

There are so many opportunities for heat exhaustion to occur! I caved and attended a festival this year in the summer, and I was pleasantly surprised to see this festival offer air conditioning tents.

It looked like a tent, but it was really a block of trailers that had ductless mini splits installed in them. To rent an air conditioning trailer, you had to have a party of five people and pay a good bit of money for it. It was just my boyfriend and I, so we found some other people in line that wanted air conditioning and agreed to split the cost with them. Once we stepped into the trailer after waiting twenty minutes for it, we were immediately greeted with the cooling graces of air conditioning. The ductless mini splits had probably been running all day long, but it looked like they were brand new so I’m sure they were able to withstand the demands. I think it was really innovative for the production company to come up with this idea because I’m sure a lot of people who are intoxicated could use the break in air conditioning after dancing in the heat all day long. It was really great to meet some new people in the line as well. We talked with them for a long time and ended up hanging out the rest of the festival!

My friends and I love going to music festivals and it’s become a tradition to drive a day early so that we can camp before the real festivities begin.

• On a road trip for a brand new festival down South, the air conditioner in the RV we were renting broke and started releasing a really weird smell.

We pulled over and my friend who swears he is a handyman opened up the air conditioner compartment to see if he could spot an obvious issue. When he opened it up, the air conditioner let out a little bit of smoke and the weird smell was even stronger. He quickly realized that this issue was a little above his skillset, so we decided to drive the RV to the nearest mechanic to see if someone could check out the air conditioner. The technician said that the RV company we used should have done a complete A/C tune up before renting out the vehicle because it looks like it was just about to be due for that service. Considering we were traveling far to the music festival, an A/C tune up would have guaranteed smooth sailing for the trip. The mechanic was able to fix the problem in a couple of hours and we were back on the road! We are hoping that the RV company will reimburse us for this service because it was a complete oversight on their part to rent us the vehicle without it being done. This wasn’t the best start to our music adventure, but I guess that’s the good thing about heading down there early. We still had extra time to camp and get settled in before we got lost in the music.

I’ve been living in the North for a few years now and so I have a good heating technician now, but it took me a really long time to find someone! There are technicians out there that really try to scam you and make you think you are getting a great service when you aren’t. Because the service is so high in demand, some heating companies will just hire anyone off of the street that doesn’t actually have the proper training, so it can be really discouraging to trust the technicians that you meet. I had some technicians come make promises to me and then ask me questions on how to service my own heater! The only silver lining is that during the process of finding a reliable and trustworthy technician, I was able to do my own research and figure out some basic techniques to repair or maintain my heater. It took me a long time but I finally found a really great heating company and all of the technicians I’ve met have been amazing to work with. It makes me really happy to find humble and helpful companies that really care about taking care of people and their home. Having a home in the North is not easy and there is so much that goes into taking care of the space. I’m lucky that my partner has been so helpful and a great teammate to helping us take care of the house. I’m glad that we’ve finally found a good rhythm and can enjoy the bliss of living in the colder climate!
