I am not impressed with the heating and cooling products that our usual Heating & A/C supplier has to offer.

We have been using the same Heating & A/C business for over a decade now and they are good.

The professionals are constantly on time and well kept. The prices are low too. But our outdated Heating & A/C system has been breaking down a lot lately. It is not our Heating & A/C corporation’s fault that our Heating & A/C system is ancient. The professionals have told us a few times that my pal and I might want to start looking into newer heating and cooling products. We agreed. We looked at what our usual Heating & A/C supplier has to offer though and my pal and I are not impressed. It is all stuff from a decade ago. I want a smart Heating & A/C system with energy saving capabilities and a high SEER rating. In other words, I want up-to-date Heating & A/C technology. Not technology that is 10 years old. When I have brought this up to my Heating & A/C professionals they say that all of their component is new. They act like I suppose it is used equipment. I know it is new. It just isn’t modern Heating & A/C equipment. I suppose I should get what I want if I am going to be paying several thousand dollars, don’t you? Despite my being insistent on this my Heating & A/C supplier just keeps showing me the same outdated Heating & A/C equipment. Then they act like their feelings are hurt when I mention a more modern Heating & A/C brand or capability. I don’t know if they won’t or can’t get up-to-date Heating & A/C technology at this business but it is looking like I will have to find a strange Heating & A/C supplier if I want up-to-date and improved heating and cooling products.

Last night, just as I was about to go to bed, I realized that my bedroom was unusually cold.

There are two air vents within my bedroom, so I listened quietly to hear the heat pour through them.

I waited and waited, but nothing ever happened. I stood in front of both air vents and tried to feel the heat coming out, just in case I wasn’t hearing it. When I still couldn’t feel the heat, I went into my living room and found the thermostat. I raised the temperature by two degrees and waited for the furnace to kick on. Again, I waited and waited but nothing happened. When I returned to the thermostat, I noticed that the thermostat said my house felt like it was 67 even though I’d set it to 74 degrees. This was the moment when I realized that my furnace wasn’t working. I didn’t want to call the emergency line with the local HVAC company because it would cost me almost double. However, I didn’t want to freeze in the middle of the night either. I decided to try and solve the problem myself before calling the HVAC company. The first thing I did was check the air filter. My old air filter didn’t look terrible, but I replaced it anyway. Next, I went to check if any of the breakers were tripped. Sure enough, something had tripped the breaker and caused my furnace to stop working. Thankfully, I was able to flip it back and my furnace began to heat my home again.

I thought that I could make it all winter without having my furnace service, but I was wrong. Initially, I forgot to have my furnace serviced before the cooler weather and week after week continued to slip by until I decided to just skip it. Although my furnace is older, I typically have it serviced by an HVAC company at least twice per year. I assumed that if I skipped the servicing this one time that I would be fine, but that wasn’t the case. When my furnace wouldn’t turn on, I was forced to call the HVAC company to come service it. I told him that the furnace wasn’t cutting on, and he told me that it could be one of several things. It was possibly a tripped breaker, a bad blower fan, bad coils, for a failed sequencer. I didn’t know what half of those things were, so I told him to look at everything and fix whatever needed fixed. The HVAC professional was at my house for 45 minutes fixing my furnace and thankfully, he had my furnace running before he left. According to him, it was a faulty blower fan and he was able to fix it that afternoon. The blower fan was “misaligned,” which meant that my furnace was providing heat but it wasn’t making it’s way into my house. This was good news to me because I was thrilled that I wouldn’t have to pay for new parts. I’m glad that the HVAC company was able to come fix my furnace for me, because I wouldn’t have been able to do it on my own.

Unfortunately, electric furnaces are cheaper to install, but we were willing to spend the money upfront in order to reap the benefits later

When we got approval to build our home, my husband and I were super excited to get started on the design process. After renting for several years and then living in older homes that fit within our budget, we knew exactly what we wanted and what we didn’t want. One of the top things we wanted for our new house was a private gas line that allowed us to run our furnace off of gas. Most people we knew were afraid of using gas to heat their home because of the carbon dioxide risk. We however, were thrilled at using gas to heat our home over electricity. Electricity was an efficient way to heat and cool any house and there were definitely less risks, but we wanted to use gas for a very specific reason. In this area, we experience a lot of winter storms that leave us without power. Sometimes, the power has been out for several days and we’re left with no heat! Having a furnace that ran off of gas would allow us to continue heating our home during these power outages unlike an electric heater. A gas furnace would also warm our house faster and stronger than an electric furnace. Unfortunately, electric furnaces are cheaper to install, but we were willing to spend the money upfront in order to reap the benefits later. Thankfully, our contractor understood why we were adamant about installing a gas line for our gas furnace and he was very helpful in making these arrangements for us.

I like to have my HVAC system serviced by the local HVAC company every 6 months or so.

I preferably like to get it done in the spring and winter months because this is when I’m transitioning between my furnace and air conditioning system.

I use this time to reset my HVAC system between the seasons to make sure that everything is running efficiently. This year though, I fell behind and forgot to have my furnace serviced before the cooler weather hit. When I saw that the weather was predicted to drop significantly one week, I began to panic. I didn’t have my furnace serviced and I thought that it was going to break down and I’d be left without heat. I didn’t know what to do because I thought that it was too late to call the local HVAC company. I took a chance though and they were more than happy to service my furnace before the temperature dropped too low. The HVAC professional who came to my house assured me that this was still a good time to have everything serviced because the company was less busy. They had completed a majority of their servicing and I wasn’t competing with all the other homes too. The HVAC professional also assured me that while my timeline for HVAC servicing was preferred and logical, there wasn’t a time limit on having your HVAC system serviced as long as it was being done. It was better to have the HVAC system serviced, even if late, rather than not at all.
