So it turns out that garages with air conditioning aren’t just for the rich and famous.

I’d seen so many shows where the rich guy has like 12 cars inside the perfect quality and air of a garage that has tile floors.

Meanwhile, I couldn’t even open the garage door on mine because it was in such embarrassing shape. And that’s really surprising when I think back to just how fully excited I was to be living somewhere with a garage. The starter home my wife and I had when we first got married didn’t have a garage. It didn’t have much in the way of quality heating and air either. That place had an ancient central air conditioning unit that just kept on running. We finally replaced when we decided to put that house on the market and get a bigger place to start a family. So when we got this place and I had a big, two car garage, I was just simply thrilled. I had a place for my wife’s car and plenty of room for all our gear. I have an old truck that still sits outside to this day so it’s never seen the inside of a garage. But I also made myself a bit of project corner where I put all my tools and had a workbench. Then we had kids and the garage became just one big dumping ground for stuff that was sort of broken or we didn’t use any longer. These days, I’ve cleared out all the junk and had the HVAC professionals install a ductless heat pump. I’m not rich or famous but I dang sure have a garage with quality heating and air.

You know the morale in the office is circling the drain when two grown women nearly come to blows over the thermostat setting.

And these are two women who are professional, kind and have worked together in the same office for about a decade.

But that’s what it had come to in our regional office. We lost a brilliant leader to retirement about 4 years ago and it just went down hill fast. I think those inside the zone controlled HVAC of the corporate offices just got way too accustomed to our branch taking care of itself. They sent out a new manager who was simply a liar and a train wreck of a leader. This person even used money earmarked for things like upgrading the HVAC equipment to prop up the bottom line. Well, I’m just glad I didn’t quit like a lot of my other colleagues did. I was front and center to watch as that ridiculous excuse for a manger was led out of the office by security. This time, we got a boss from inside the zone controlled HVAC to take over. And this lady does not fool around. She also made sure to bring that zone controlled HVAC with her. That was the first thing she did after canning the old boss. We had HVAC professionals crawling all over the office floor updating the HVAC equipment as well as the HVAC technology. From there, it’s been an escalator ride back to doing business the way it is supposed to be done in this company.

The things that are out there that I’m supposed to be doing are numerous.

I don’t get out of the air conditioning enough to get my exercise.

There are far too many sandwiches and beer in my diet and I don’t exactly look to work extra hard to make my bosses look better. The list is long when it comes to the shortcomings in my life that I know about. Now the other stuff I don’t know about is out there too. You can take getting the ductwork cleaning done off that list. First let me clearly state that I really didn’t quite understand the need for ductwork cleaning and ductwork resealing to start with. The HVAC equipment essentially blows air through those air ducts so I just didn’t understand why the air ducts needed to be cleaned. Then, I watched in horror as a dust glob thing fell from the air duct above the dining room table while we had company. My wife looked at me as though I had planned this air duct caper just to ruin the lovely evening that she had worked hard to put together. That sort of stung but I called the HVAC company the next day anyway. Turns out, gravity is the reason that we need ductwork cleaning. In most cases, the ductwork is hung inside our home and so gravity works on the air ducts. Slowly but surely, gaps appear around the joints of the air duct segments. And that’s how the dust, dirt and grime get in there. Oh and pests can get in there and nest as well. How about that for the ultimate gross out.

This type of summer is not near as tough as back home

Where I grew up and lived almost my entire life, I was never actually all that excited about summer. Well, I guess when I was a little kid I was super stoked to be out of school. Still, the summer meant searing heat and high humidity. Every house I lived in had a great heat pump as the residential HVAC equipment. The heat pump was the one stop shop for our heating and cooling needs. All you had to do was flip the thermostat from heating to cooling. There were no other sources for heating and cooling. Then, I moved up here. I’m still not exactly sure that moving to the north was a great idea. It’s something I had to do if I wanted to continue my career track. But there are times when I really consider whether this five year commitment was worth that career progression. I’ve done one winter thus far and I simply can’t imagine doing another four. The house I bought came with new residential HVAC equipment. And while there is a heat pump for the central air conditioning, that’s all it’s for. The heating is done by a big, gas furnace that just cranks out the heating. I’m so thankful that I had that gas furnace and my neighbor showed me how to winterize the house to maximize HVAC efficiency. It’s also the first time that I’ve really ever been excited about the summer being here. This type of summer is not near as tough as back home. But I’m still awfully glad to have the central air conditioning.

If I can drop something from my list, I’m all for it.

Being a single mom and trying to have a nice house with good quality heating and air to raise my kids in isn’t easy.

It’s the same house my ex and I purchased when we decided to start a family two years after we were married. We both loved the house right away but it almost didn’t happen over the old HVAC equipment. The seller just wouldn’t budge on replacing the worn out HVAC unit. It was a deal breaker for us so we withdrew our generous offer and were ready to walk away entirely. The very next day, the seller agreed to cut a really big chunk off the selling price just so he didn’t have to deal with the HVAC replacement. That was such a stellar deal for us. We got so much more residential HVAC that we could have ever afforded otherwise. With that sort of investment in HVAC equipment and HVAC technology, we were committed to making sure it was taken care of. Now, my ex lives in another state and I have two almost teen girls. So not having to worry with the calls to the HVAC company for HVAC maintenance was a welcome thing for me. Signing up for the HVAC service plan allow me to have the HVAC company do the remembering when it comes time for the HVAC maintenance appointments. And that takes just one more thing off the list that seems never ending already. But more importantly, the HVAC equipment is getting the consistent HVAC service it needs.

We don’t just get heat down here.

We get heat that feels like someone put a wet blanket that has been heated in a steam sauna over your head.

And we get four straight months of that business each and every year. Yet, we live in an age where residential HVAC comes to the rescue. I grew up this far south and so I have some experience with managing the heat and humidity. But my grandfather never had residential HVAC until the early 70’s in any of the homes he lived in. That’s sort of stunning to me. I just can’t even imagine what that must have been like. For one, he sure was partial to the shade, a nice breeze and a fan if you had one. That was my grandpa’s idea of cooling. He really wasn’t all that fond of residential HVAC believe it or not. So I guess there is a perspective there to learn from perhaps. I do my best not at not over HVAC cooling my house. I don’t have a smart thermostat so I’ve learned to program my thermostat. It’s programmed for a thermostat setting of the low 80’s during the heat of the summer. Even when we’re away, I make sure the HVAC cooling is still on. That’s because the heat pump is not just cooling the house when the air conditioning is on. The HVAC cooling process is also balancing the humidity levels inside the house. And that keeps me from having to take a bunch of bleach and water to the mold and mildew all summer.
