I’ve never been a huge fan of going out to places and shopping.

I don’t really enjoy any type of shopping where I have to go somewhere with a bunch of people.

I don’t even enjoy going out to eat at restaurants, though I do enjoy their food so I often get delivery from different places. I love just spending time at home being able to adjust my temperature control settings as needed and relaxing in front of my fireplace. Well, recently my brother was telling me about his new smart thermostat and he said I should think about going to the HVAC supplier with him to look at some of their thermostats they had on sale. He said his was on sale and if I hurried, I might be able to get the same deal. I had to tell him though, I would rather look online. I ended up hopping online after asking him what smart thermostat he bought. I was able to find it in no time and I even managed to find it cheaper than what he paid for it. He then asked if the cost of shipping was high, and when I told him shipping was free, he punched me in the arm. I’ve always been good at finding awesome deals online and most of the time, it’s cheaper than going to the store even when there are sales going on. I have been buying my air filters online regularly too and I use HEPA filters. So I had the smart thermostat delivered to my home and I didn’t have any issue installing the thing. I really have to say, I really like it and it has a lot of nice features like geofencing and learning mode. I didn’t even have to program the thermostat, yet it knows my preferred schedule already!

The other day, I was talking with my HVAC professional about the air quality in my home.

He’s actually the one who asked me if I would like to improve the air quality. I didn’t think my air quality was that bad to be honest and I said I thought it was good enough. He asked me if I ever considered the invisible things I couldn’t see floating in the air like mold spores, bacteria, and viruses. I wasn’t thinking too much about pathogens and he said a UV air purification system would be perfect to make sure people didn’t get sick in my home and such a system would help to protect the health of everybody living in the house. When he put it that way, I decided to look further into it. The HVAC expert also told me a few other things like it would be good to have my ductwork system cleaned because it was a little dirty and that also affects the air quality. Well, I knew that I couldn’t afford too much apart from my regular HVAC maintenance and care, so I told him I would think about saving up for a UV air purification system. I was able to have him take care of the ductwork cleaning though and he did a very thorough job. Honestly, I can’t believe how much the air quality improved in my home after the ducts were all clean. The guy even showed before and after pictures so I could see what I was paying for. I’m going to save up for the UV air purifier too because I do want to keep my family safer at home because I do worry about their health and safety.

So I quit calling the professionals for a few seasons and eventually my HVAC broke down.

My father drilled it into my head that I needed regular HVAC maintenance when I eventually moved out on my own. He actually gave me chores working on the HVAC. He showed me how to change the air filters and how to clean the outdoor AC condenser unit. He also showed me how to clean the HVAC unit indoors, but he stressed the power had to be shut off when working on any part of the HVAC or I could be electrocuted and killed. I was always careful about that since I never wanted to die at a young age. The air filters were a breeze, but the cleaning of the inner components was tough, but I became pretty good at it. He said that if you work on the HVAC carefully like that, you only have to worry about getting AC and heating system tune-ups and hardly any breakdowns. So I did that when I moved out into my first apartment. I called for regular HVAC maintenance from the pros, but I felt skeptical about having to pay all that money. So I quit calling the professionals for a few seasons and eventually my HVAC broke down. So I called the HVAC experts again and they told me my HVAC would have been fine if I got regular maintenance. I never should have quit with the HVAC maintenance, I thought I could do it all on my own. Of course, the professionals go to school for this type of thing, and HVAC systems are complicated. After that lesson, I will never miss out on my important HVAC system maintenance again!

Honestly, nobody in my family has ever installed an HVAC system.

I thought my brother was going into the HVAC industry, but he never passed the certification tests.

I thought he wouldn’t give up, but he decided to go to a regular college and he got into a successful business career. I also have a pretty good career, but I never would have thought I myself would be installing an HVAC system at home. It started with my old HVAC equipment breaking down on me. The HVAC professionals said that it wasn’t worth fixing at this point because the HVAC equipment was just too old. They gave me different installation quotes for different styles of HVAC systems. The geothermal HVAC systems were very costly, though they seemed worth the investment considering the energy savings. The next best energy saver I learned would be a ductless multi-split system. These types of systems can run up to 8 indoor units from a single condenser unit, so you have numerous zones with customized temperature control settings. It seemed nice, but the cost of installation was too expensive. Fortunately, a buddy of mine said systems like this could be installed by the average homeowner. I didn’t believe him at first, but he showed me the tutorials. He said it would be ideal to go for a DIY ductless mini split system. These systems are somewhat smaller, maxing at 5 or 6 indoor units, but they can be installed by a motivated DIYer. So I ordered the system and my buddy helped me with the installation. I did most of the work though. The finished installation was great and I was happy to brag to my family that I installed my own HVAC system at home.

I was not very happy when I got a few quotes to replace our ductwork.

I actually was thinking I might have to install a new ductless HVAC until I looked at an online tutorial about how to install your own customized ductwork.

So I ordered some rolls of sheet metal and got some tools I would need like a bender tool. Basically, you have to measure the opening for the ductwork to connect to and then mark it appropriately on the sheet metal and make your cuts with a straight cutting tool. The guy on the tutorial made it look pretty easy. It wasn’t that challenging, but I don’t think I did a better job than the guy on the video. The good news was that I was making progress and I didn’t have to pay a small fortune, I just had to cover the cost for the materials that I needed. I learned how to do cross brakes to make the ductwork strong and secure with no popping. I also learned how to fold the lips with the bender tool and how to put all the sheet metal together to form the ductwork. It wasn’t too tough when I got a hang of it and it was kind of fun to do. Because I was able to do all the ductwork and then seal it in my home to my exciting central HVAC, I was able to get a few repairs on the HVAC through a local contractor and then my HVAC was working great again. The local contractor was even impressed with the customized fabricated ductwork. He said it must’ve cost a fortune, but he was amazed when I told him I took care of the ductwork fabrication.

It was an interesting experience for our son when the HVAC professional came out recently.

It was a new guy that we never worked with before, but the man was very knowledgeable when it came to the HVAC components and how to fix everything to work at maximum capacity.

He explained everything he was doing and he even went over the 15 step process for maintaining the heating and cooling units. While he was explaining everything to us, our son was listening intently. When all was said and done, the HVAC professional asked if we had any other questions. That’s when our son said that he wanted to know how the HVAC system works. We told the HVAC worker he didn’t have to answer that since it was a relatively complicated process. He said he didn’t mind though and he could keep it short and simple so our son could easily understand. He spoke of the different components of the HVAC equipment and how they worked together to provide heating and cooling to our home. He said that the thermostat is like the brain, and it must be programmed or adjusted to the right temperature control settings and the system would work to provide heating or cooling until the desired temperature was met. He explained how the compressor worked and how it was able to achieve a cooling effect. He also explained how the gas furnace worked and blew the heating through the ductwork system and out through all the HVAC vents in the house. After all that, our son said he wanted to become an HVAC expert just like this young man.
