I have owned my HVAC company for a little over five years now, and I realized my customer acquisition was dropping off. I wasn’t sure how to go about retaining customers and continuing to grow my numbers. I talked to my sister and told her I thought I needed to do some HVAC marketing. She instantly called my wife and told her it was time for a shopping trip. I had to remind her I wasn’t going to the market, nor was I shopping. I wanted to market my HVAC company. She looked a bit disappointed and called my wife to tell her the shopping trip was on for Saturday and I was paying for everything. I thanked her and went back into my office. Two hours later, she came in with a list of online companies that specialized in HVAC company marketing. My sister, the receptionist and phone voice, had already fielded three of the companies and said they had the best marketing program at a reasonable price. She circled the two HVAC marketing companies that she thought would be best for us. After speaking to an employee at the HVAC marketing company, I had to thank my sister with more than a shopping trip. I was sure I was going to double my customer acquisition in a year, and I was sending her and my wife on a cruise. I threw hints about where they would like to go, but they were holding out on me. My sister said we needed to make sure we had the acquisition for the HVAC company before she would let me go to that expense.

My dad is the type of father who believes his children should talk when talked to, and never interrupt an adult when talking unless it was a matter of life or death.

I hated the idea that we were to be seen but not heard, but it was his belief.

Even after I was in high school, dad stuck with his rule. I was getting ready to graduate high school and considering a career in HVAC. I had a lot of information from the local technical school, but I wanted to talk to someone who had been there. When I overheard dad talking to mom about the HVAC tech being there the following day, I got excited. I was sure I was going to get to talk to him and get more information. I had so many questions about HVAC that I couldn’t wait until the HVAC technician arrived. The HVAC technician arrived just a few minutes before my dad. I got to introduce myself and tell him I was considering a career as an HVAC tech, but then dad arrived. He ordered me to go into the house. I knew I was already in trouble, so I defied my dad. I continued to ask questions, even though I saw my dad simmering a short distance away. I don’t know why he changed his mind about punishing me, but when the HVAC tech left, he asked if HVAC technical school was something I truly wanted, and asked me to get the paperwork for him. He wanted to review the application and make sure I was qualified to apply before he signed the papers and paid the tuition.

Whenever I was getting ready to go somewhere, the warning signal on my smart thermostat told me it was time to change the air filter.

• Changing the air filter didn’t take a long time, but it could be very messy.

I had once ignored the warning on the thermostat. Every twenty minutes there was a beep, followed by the warning that it was time to change the air filter. I swore I would never do that again. It awakened me about ten times before I went outside in my pajamas and changed the air filter at midnight. I knew I had to find a better way to remember to change the air filters. The first thing I had to do was disengage the reminder in the thermostat. If I wasn’t able to disengage the alarm, I was going to disengage the smart thermostat. I knew it would be easier to buy a new thermostat than to listen to that alarm going off and having sore ribs from my wife poking me to take care of the air filter alarm. I was looking for anything I could find that would help me to remember how to change the air filter without dismembering my thermostat. I got up one morning, and my wife had a calendar sitting on the table in my eating spot. Every month had a date circled for when and which equipment needed to have the air filter changed. She even noted when it was time to have the maintenance done on the AC and the furnace. She’s better than the thermostat.

The HVAC tech smiled and shrugged

I knew it had been a long time since I had changed the air filter in my air conditioning unit. When my husband walked out on me, I didn’t know how to do the home maintenance. He did everything around the house, and he left me in the dark. I didn’t know if I was angrier at him for walking out on me, or for not showing me how to do the home’s maintenance. It took a couple of months before I could face anyone or anything without breaking down. It was another month before I found his maintenance list. At the top of the list was changing the air filter in the air conditioning unit, or the furnace. I didn’t even know there was an air filter, let alone knowing where it could be found. I called the HVAC company and asked them if they could come to the house and show me where to find the air filter in the air conditioning unit. When the HVAC tech showed up the next day, he showed me where to find the air filter. When he went to pull it out, I thought he got a hernia. It had been so long since the air filter had been changed that it had become clogged and lodged inside the AC unit. I was so embarrassed,embarrassed; I was sure I looked like I had a sunburn. The HVAC tech smiled and shrugged. He told me he came across this situation more often than he could count. I was sure he was fudging it, but I said thank you.

What happened the day I had my first accident, I do not know. I knew I had to make a left turn, and even when I turned into the right-hand turn lane, I knew I had to turn left. I pulled my car off into a parking lot that was within 10 feet of where he hit me. The young HVAC tech pulled in behind me. Two minutes later, the police pulled in front of us. I didn’t give the HVAC tech a chance to talk. I told the police officer I had been distracted, pulled into the right turn lane, and then turned left directly in front of the HVAC service van. When he asked if my car was drivable, I told him yes and let them know I already called my insurance company. All I needed to do was get the insurance information from the HVAC technician. The cop wrote up a police report and gave us each a copy. Although the HVAC tech could not have avoided hitting me, he was afraid to call his boss, because it was his first day on the job.
