At twenty-eight, I had my own house, not through hard work or luck.

I may even go to the extent of calling it bad luck.

I inherited the house from my grandparents, who had passed with a five-month gap between their deaths. The general state of the home probably had my grandparents turning in their graves. There was a week when I slept next to the fireplace because the boiler had chosen to break down in the evening. When the HVAC tech came to the house the next day, he told me that the heater was long overdue for heater maintenance. He took me through their HVAC service plan, and I told him to go ahead with it. The only thing I always took note of was replacing the furnace filter, but other than that, I had completely neglected the electric heating system. Not just that, but everything else altogether, their deaths had hit me hard. At work, I was almost always on autopilot. One day, I woke up and decided I was done with my depressive state. I started working on the house every free time I had. As a professional in the heating industry, I decided to install heated floors in my bedroom because it took a long time to heat up during winter. I also installed a new wireless thermostat that I was sure could save up to ten percent of the energy used. I also became keen when it came to the furnace/heater installation so that I could note when a heating repair was needed before the problem escalated. As usual, it was a relatively slow day.

It was already afternoon, and the only call that had come through was for the HVAC service plan for an electric boiler. I also had a session with the homeowner where I showed him how to clean a furnace filter. Just when I was contemplating heading home early, a call from the hospital came in. Their electric heating system had shut down, and all efforts to restart it again, including restarting it from the wireless thermostat, did not work. They needed an HVAC tech for an urgent heating repair. My colleague and I immediately rushed to the hospital. We found out that the heater did not have a major problem on arriving. Heater maintenance was basically what it needed. Most big buildings have a complex web of heat and AC products, contrary to the hospital with a simple furnace/heater installation. However, the detached part of the hospital had heated floors, which was a recent favorite and one of the most preferred types of HVAC in the heating industry. Before we left, my colleague got a call that her niece had been rushed to the same hospital so he stayed behind. I could not wait to get home because it was my turn and the kids to make dinner. I also had to pass by the grocery store to get some ingredients that we did not have. My only hope was that one of the children did not have some elaborate project they needed to submit the following day because it took an eternity to finish.

I have always avoided carpets, mostly because I have allergies, and they hold so much dust and dirt.

Despite this, our home had carpet in the living room and the bedrooms.

We had gotten a very good deal on the house that would have been foolish to pass just because of something that we could easily change later on, plus there was room on the budget for that. The house had an electric heating system, and the annual HVAC service plan with the local heating dealership had served us well for the past two years. After two years, we were finally able to redo our floors. The floor underneath the carpet was just concrete, and since we both wanted to have tiled floors, we set out to look for the tiles that would best suit our style as well as the interior. The one downside of tiles is that they are cold. My partner suggested having heated floors to solve that problem. The next thing was to consult an HVAC tech to find out if we could incorporate that with our current heater. He assured us that since it was an electric boiler. This meant that he would have to change a few things for the furnace/heater installation but nothing major. Heater maintenance would have to be conducted, and then the cables would be put in before laying the tiles. I knew little of the heating industry and my knowledge on heat and AC products, but I knew that a wireless thermostat helps save energy, and that is why we would be having one installed. Before I decided to train as an HVAC tech, I had no idea how to replace or clean a furnace filter.

My siblings were shocked when I decided to join the heating industry because I had never shown any interest, even in our boiler.

I was only good at saying how unreliable it was when it broke down, and I was tasked with calling the heating dealership for heating repair. The money I earned from the job was to help my parents offset my university fees. Initially, it was just something I did as a means of survival, but I realized that I enjoyed what I was doing with time. When the school became so demanding, I only worked on Saturdays and holidays. By the time I was done with college, I had worked on so many furnace/heater installations and did numerous heater maintenance. Most homeowners I came across had no idea what consisted of an HVAC service plan, and I took my time to explain the various steps and why they were important. The customers were delighted with this, which led to more business for the company I was working for. By the time I was graduating, I had worked on so many heaters, done a lot of heater maintenance, made very many connections in that line of work, and replaced my parents’ analog regulator with a wireless thermostat. I was lucky to get a job as a heat and AC products engineer in a heating company through the connections I made. Through that job, I was able to buy my own house, which had an electric heating system, specifically heated floors.

We were a group of friends enjoying a summer afternoon on the deck of one of our friend’s houses. One of them commented on a new wireless thermostat that he had installed, and that is when the discussion about furnace/heater installations started. Everyone had something to say about various heat and AC products that they had come across or experienced. Most of us knew a lot about electric heaters since the bulk of us had an electric heating system. Only one of us had a gas boiler, which we all agreed heated a house a lot faster than the electric ones, although the energy efficiency was less compared to the latter. She enjoyed her newfound freedom because she had been alienated from all her friends and almost all her family. When she got married, she was very young, and the man was older than her and let her do even the simplest tasks such as changing a furnace filter because he claimed she was not smart enough to get anything done correctly. The instruction were apparent; if anyone was to call, I told them to call the following day plus make up some excuse as to why they could not pick; they were not able to pick up their PC. This had the makings of a bad day. Two minutes passed with no calls. During the seventh minute, a up-to-date number came through. When I passed my message as instructed, the guy told myself and others that he was an Heating plus Air Conditioning tech from a heating dealership. They had been contacted plus were instructed to avail themselves as soon as possible. The PC owner was adamant that they should attend to the Heating plus Air Conditioning service program the following day.I told them the specialists were fully booked for more than two afternoons with several oil furnace/heater replacements. I was told to redirect them to my apartment if I gratified since the payment had already been made. It may have been a sarcastic comment, but I did exactly that to teach them a lesson. I told the serviceman there was an address change, plus they were to do gas furnace service for my electric heating system. The boiler also needed heating repair. When he asked if he could go ahead plus also install the wireless control component plus update the oil furnace filter, I told him it was okay. Who knew that such a poor day could lead myself and others to get up-to-date heat plus AC products. I would have jumped on the occasion if they had even made a joke about installing radiant heated floors. The heating industry gods must have been smiling at myself and others that day because my gas furnace would be running prefer a up-to-date a single after the servicing.
