Buying a home warranty when we closed on our house last year was definitely worth the money for us. Before we started to purchase our first home, my parents told us that we should probably go ahead and spring for the home warranty when we closed on the house. I had never even heard of a home warranty before, so I did a little bit of research on it and I decided that we would get it when we closed. Whenever I’m cleaning the ductwork out for my HVAC customers, I always end up finding weird stuff in the ductwork.

This was not something that I ever thought about when I first went to school to become a heating and cooling technician.

No one in my HVAC certification classes ever mentioned anything like this, so the first time that it happened to me, I was really shocked. I had no clue that anyone would ever even think about hiding things in the ductwork at their homes. This thought had never even crossed my mind before I became an HVAC technician. One of the things that you end up doing a lot as an HVAC technician is professionally cleaning peoples ductwork. When you do that, you have to open up the ends of the main line and then make sure that you seal them back up completely or even better than they were when you first started the job. This is where people mess up a lot whenever they try to do the job themselves. Anyway, a lot of times the ductwork can become like a big black hole for people. They hide things in their ductwork and then forget that it’s in there, or they have kids and pets who do it for them. It’s easier than you might think to get that stuff out of the ductwork, but it seems that most of the time, people are scared to do it themselves and they just call us. Once I found a bag of money in the ductwork. Another time, I found an old clown costume. That one was really creepy!

I’ve been worried lately that we are going to wear out the HVAC system in our house.

I know that we probably use our HVAC system more than most people around here do because we just like being comfortable in our home.

Maybe we are all spoiled or something, but in the summertime, we like to keep the temperature settings on the thermostat around 65 degrees. We’d love to have it cold in the house in the summer when the weather is hot at the side.That means that our central air conditioning unit runs a whole lot more than people who keep their thermostats set at 70 or 72 degrees. I realize this, and I know that our air conditioning bills are much higher than most people’s, but we don’t care because having central air conditioning is that important to us during the summer. And honestly, it’s the same thing for us during the winter. We have really cold winters around here, and so we keep our furnace running nearly all the time during the cold season. I know that when you use your heating and cooling system so much throughout the year, it puts excessive wear and tear on all of the components inside of the HVAC system. All of the parts need to be maintained regularly because without the right HVAC maintenance, the parts will fail and you’ll end up stuck without a working heating and cooling system. I’m afraid that that might be where we are heading since we use our heating and cooling almost constantly!

I don’t know if I should try to upgrade our old furnace system or just go ahead and replace the whole thing.

My husband and I are actually arguing about it. He’s the kind of guy who likes to fix things and keep them going for as long as humanly possible. I understand that, and I even like that about him most of the time. However, when it comes to the heating system in our house, I feel like it might actually be time for us to go for an upgrade even though our furnace might still have a little bit of life in it. The old electric furnace that we have in our house was here when we bought the place ten years ago. I have no idea how long it had been in the house before that. As far as we know, it could have been here for twenty years or more! And I will readily admit that it has done well for us over the past decade. However, at this point, there have been so many leaps forward in heating and cooling technology that I think we need to upgrade to a newer furnace. I keep telling my husband that if we were to upgrade our current furnace to a newer one, it will end up saving us lots of money on our heating bills in the years to come. Whenever I mention how it will save us money on our heating bills, I can always see him waffling on his decision to keep the old furnace. I know that saving money is always the way to get to him! I think that it is just a matter of time before he comes around to my way of thinking. I’m pretty sure that by next winter, I will have my nice new furnace set up in the basement.

There was a afternoon that I was so gleeful to get current home from work.
