They said I really wouldn’t mind the heat once my great friend and I got out on the boat! I may have agreed with them if Ed and I were moving all the time, and unfortunately, most of our time on the trip was at rest while people were fishing or scuba diving. I could not swim, and fishing was no fun for me. I spent most of my time trying to find shade and losing myself in a book! My fondest wish was that they had air conditioner on the boat. I would have settled for a great fan, but an air conditioner would have been much better. My brother Ed told me to try to have a little fun, but it was almost 100 degrees on the lake… Ed offered to get me a large tube so I could have fun in the water, even though I was terrified of drowning. It was Ed’s fault I could not swim, and every time I was in the pool, Ed wanted to play sink the whale, and I was the whale; Although I was four years younger, Ed didn’t care. I was the only other man in the pool with him. I didn’t even want to go in a kiddie pool if Ed was someplace near, but when Ed and I made the choice to go back to shore for dinner, I decided to stay back at the cabin, there was air conditioner inside, and I could relax, curl up on the bed, and watch television or read. I was finally enjoying my time at the beach, now that I was left alone with my air conditioner. Ed headed back out after dinner with my husband and our kids.

After learning how to do his own HVAC company marketing, I figured dad wouldn’t need my help any longer, but I was wrong. He needed some to help with his new HVAC website. He thought he needed a new website, and I asked why. He told me about the plans for his company, but he didn’t know if he should keep it on one website, or on two. I told him that was his choice. Many companies had more than one website. We talked about one website or two and then he asked if it would behoove him to have the website overhauled. He thought this was stagnant since it was no longer attracting customers. He wanted the HVAC website to be fresh and modern. I worked for almost a week overhauling the entire website. I showed him the changes, and although many were subtle, they were more attractive and more pertinent to today’s customer. Since the customer database was now younger and looking for ideas that were more environmentally friendly, I thought we should create a website that was pointing toward that end. He agreed and helped me with ideas for the HVAC website. We were having a lot of fun doing some small changes on some pages, and some major overhauls on other pages. I couldn’t believe how receptive dad was with the changes in the HVAC website, and how perceptive he was to come with ideas I hadn’t even considered. My dad would have made an amazing HVAC web creator when he was younger, but he isn’t interested in working for everyone anymore.

I enjoy my job as an online marketing specialist. I had been doing it for several years before my dad finally understood what I had been doing when I got out of college. He was interested to see what all I could do with online marketing. I was showing him some of the websites I had created, and what a marketing package would look like. He really enjoyed watching me work. After a couple of days, I noticed he was trying to do marketing for his HVAC company. I gave him a couple of days to experiment, thinking he would eventually come to me and ask for my help. It took him more than a couple of days, but eventually he asked me. He wanted to know if I would do the marketing for his HVAC company. The first thing he needed done was to have a professional HVAC website created, and then we would work on a marketing package for him. We talked about online presence, and working with social media. He frowned when I said social media. He told me social media was for sharing recipes, talking about sex, bashing others, and sharing jokes that were a hundred years old. What did HVAC have to do with social media? After showing him what social media could do for his HVAC company, he wanted me to market his HVAC company. He told me he could always use a few more customers in his database. After a few weeks, dad was ready to take over the HVAC company marketing on his own. He was a really fast learner.
He told me we could get ductless HVAC.
When we put an addition on our home, we knew we were going to need to get creative with the heating and air conditioning. We already had little heat and air conditioning getting to some of the rooms. Adding the addition onto the HVAC system was not going to work. The contractor told us we could put another HVAC system in the basement, but that would be expensive when we needed to buy fuel. We were looking for something that would be energy efficient and efficient in heating and air conditioning. My husband asked me what I thought about ductless HVAC, not just for the addition, but for the entire house. He had been reading about them, and he was interested. They said how efficient they were, and it would only take a few solar panels to make enough energy to run the ductless HVAC system even when the power went out. I had also been reading about ductless HVAC. Its energy efficiency was rated as tops in HVAC. It was also excellent for heating and air conditioning, and it ran quietly. There wasn’t the need for constant upkeep, like with traditional HVAC and there was no ductwork in the house. We asked the HVAC technician to help us get a quote on having ductless HVAC installed in our entire house. If need be, we would have it put in the addition for now, and when the traditional HVAC system died, we could just add on to the original ductless HvAC system. My husband told me we could at least install it in the rooms that weren’t getting good HVAC and one of those rooms was our bedroom.
My boiler system was fifty years old.
When my husband and I bought our house, we were told the boiler was almost fifty years old.
We knew boilers lasted a long time, but we figured at most, we would have ten years to save for the ductless mini split HVAC system we really wanted installed.
Since the boiler didn’t use ductwork, we didn’t need to worry about having the old ductwork removed from the house. It was a win-win situation. Here it is ten years later, and the boiler system is running well. I called the HVAC company for an assessment. The technician told us the boiler system looked like new. He could see it lasting another ten years or more. I was about in tears, and he looked at me oddly. I told him I wanted to get rid of the boiler and have a ductless HVAC system installed. I then got a bright idea. I wanted to know if they could give us a trade-in value on the boiler, and take the cost off the ductless HVAC system. He said he couldn’t make that decision, but since it was fifty years old, he didn’t see it happening. We could donate to a homeless group, and possibly give someone a heating system for free, but with it being so old, no one would want one. If the boiler was too old to give away for free, then why wasn’t it too old to continue working. I really wanted to get rid of the boiler and get a ductless HVAC system, but no one was listening to my pleas.
Ongoing issues with my HVAC
Okay, I have to tell you guys what I have been going through the last few months.
I live in the deep south, where air conditioning is not optional, it’s mandatory.
When I moved into my dream house, I found there were 2 separate HVAC systems in it, one for each end of the house. One of these systems was installed during construction, the other one was added later when another contractor converted the garage into a master bedroom suite. Right around the first of the year, the temps got very temperate out, and I stopped running the AC in the master bedroom for a few weeks. When the weather got hot and sticky again, I clicked the thermostat and got no response. At some point, the secondary HVAC system stopped working, and I had no idea why. I called a local HVAC contractor who offered a free estimate for work projects. The man climbed up into the attic crawlspace to look at the secondary HVAC system, and when he came back down he was shaking his head. He flatly told me – “I can’t help you.” Furthermore, he explained that none of the other local HVAC contractors would be able to help me, either. Whoever had installed the second HVAC system was not a professional, and the work was very sloppy. The placement of the HVAC equipment made it impossible to reach, so it could not be repaired. The only real option was to cut out a piece of the ceiling, remove the old HVAC system and replace it with a new one.
